Doug Shaftel is a shareholder at Kennedy & Graven, Chartered, and practices in the areas of eminent domain, real estate, and environmental law.

With over eighteen years of practice, Doug leads the firm’s eminent domain practice group. He has extensive experience litigating eminent domain, relocation and real property matters before administrative, trial and appellate courts. Doug has represented cities, counties and other public entities on projects of all sizes and with every type of funding source. He has assisted with every phase of property acquisition. Prior to joining Kennedy & Graven, Doug worked for over seven years as an Assistant Attorney General representing the Washington State Department of Transportation and subsequently represented Pierce County’s sewer utility and road construction division. Doug has also litigated complex cases in federal court, including a land use case involving a dispute over $2 billion in funding for fish passage projects and a drinking water contamination case. 

Doug is admitted to practice law in the states of Minnesota and Washington, in both state and federal court. He is a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association and Hennepin County Bar Association. Doug is Vice President of the Minnesota Eminent Domain Counsel Association and is an Officer for the Hennepin County Bar Association’s Eminent Domain Section.

Born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska, Doug enjoys a variety of winter activities, including cross-country and downhill skiing.  In the summer, he enjoys swimming, running, biking and camping trips with his wife, Mya and daughter, Corahl. He and his family live in Minneapolis. He is also a fan of Minnesota United FC.
